Safety First: If You Smell Gas
A rotten-egg smell can mean a gas leak. Don’t touch light switches or electrical devices. Get everyone out of the house, leave the door open, and call your gas utility and 911 once you’re outside. Don’t go back in until emergency responders say it’s safe. Then call us, and we’ll inspect your furnace before it’s turned back on. If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, follow the same steps.
Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair
Small heating problems are cheaper and easier to fix early, before a weak part takes others with it. Call us if you notice any of these:
- No heat, or lukewarm air from the vents.
- Cold spots or uneven heat from room to room. This can be the furnace, but it can also be the ductwork.
- The furnace turns on and off too often (short cycling) or runs constantly.
- Banging, booming, squealing or rattling when it starts or runs.
- A yellow or orange burner flame. It should be mostly blue.
- Unusual smells after the first few days of the heating season.
- Gas bills that keep rising while your use stays the same.
- Ignition problems. The furnace tries to light several times or keeps locking out.

We service Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, American Standard, Ruud and other major brands, including systems we didn’t install.
How a Furnace Repair Visit Works
- Call or book online. We schedule the earliest available time and let you know when your technician will arrive.
- Safety and diagnostic check. The technician checks ignition, the burners, gas pressure, venting, safety controls and airflow to find the real cause.
- Explanation and price. We explain what failed and give you the price before starting. If the furnace is near the end of its life, we’ll give you an honest comparison of repair and replacement.
- Repair. Our trucks carry common parts, so most repairs are finished on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return visit as soon as it arrives.
- Test. We run the system through a full heating cycle and check that it operates safely before we leave.
What Affects the Cost of Furnace Repair?
Many furnace repairs are simple: a flame sensor cleaning, an igniter or a pressure switch. Some are major, like an inducer motor, a control board or a heat exchanger. The cost depends on the part, the age and brand of the furnace, whether parts are still under the manufacturer’s warranty, and how easy the furnace is to reach in the attic, closet or crawl space. A diagnostic fee may apply to repair visits. M&S Maintenance Plan members get 10% off repairs, and larger jobs can be paid over time with Wisetack financing.
Repair or Replace Your Furnace?
A furnace often lasts 15 to 20 years with good maintenance. Replacement is worth considering when:
- the furnace is more than 15 years old and needs repairs every season,
- a cracked heat exchanger is confirmed,
- your gas bills keep rising, or
- the repair cost multiplied by the furnace’s age is over $5,000.
We’ll always tell you honestly what we find. If a new system makes more sense, see furnace and heating installation.
Northern Nevada Winters and Your Heating System
Winter nights in Sparks and Reno regularly fall below freezing. A heating failure is more than an inconvenience, especially for young children, older family members and pets. Local conditions put extra demands on heating systems:
- Altitude. At about 4,400 to 4,500 feet, there is less oxygen for combustion. Gas furnaces need to be set up and adjusted correctly for elevation to burn cleanly and efficiently.
- Big swings between day and night temperatures mean many starts and stops each day, which wears out igniters and other starting parts.
- Dry, dusty air clogs filters and coats flame sensors, two of the most common causes of no-heat calls.
- Heat pumps in cold weather depend on working defrost controls and auxiliary or furnace backup heat on the coldest nights.
A fall tune-up finds most of these problems before the first cold snap. It’s included in the M&S Maintenance Plan, along with a check for cracked heat exchangers and a flue draft test.
Before You Call: Quick Checks
- Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and set above room temperature, and replace its batteries if it uses them.
- Make sure the furnace’s power switch, which often looks like a light switch near the unit, is on, and that the breaker hasn’t tripped.
- Replace a dirty air filter. A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut itself off.
- Check that the furnace door panel is closed properly. Many furnaces won’t run with it loose.
- On a high-efficiency furnace, check that the outdoor intake and exhaust pipes aren’t blocked by snow or debris.
If the heat still doesn’t come on, call us at (775) 843-7930.

Furnace Repair FAQs
Why is my furnace running but blowing cold air?
Common causes are a dirty flame sensor that shuts the burners off, a failed igniter, an overheating furnace tripping its high-limit switch because of a clogged filter, or a thermostat set to “fan on” instead of “auto”. Check the filter and thermostat first. If it still blows cold, call us.
Can you repair my furnace the same day?
Often, yes. We offer same-day service whenever the schedule allows, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Our trucks carry common furnace parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit.
Do you repair heat pumps and electric furnaces too?
Yes. We repair gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat pumps, dual-fuel systems and ductless mini-splits from all major brands.
Is a cracked heat exchanger dangerous?
It can be. A crack can let combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, mix with the air in your home. If we find a cracked heat exchanger, we’ll show you, explain your options and make sure the system isn’t run unsafely. Every home with a gas appliance should have working carbon monoxide alarms.
Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?
Short cycling usually means the furnace is overheating, often because of a clogged filter or restricted airflow. It can also mean a dirty flame sensor, a thermostat problem or an oversized furnace. Short cycling wastes gas and wears out parts, so it’s worth having it checked.
How can I avoid a furnace breakdown this winter?
Change the filter regularly and book a fall tune-up. The M&S Maintenance Plan includes a 29-point heating inspection and tune-up each fall. It also gives you priority scheduling and 10% off any repairs.
