Heat Pump Installation & Repair in Sparks, NV

M&S Heating and Air Conditioning installs, repairs and maintains heat pumps for homes in Sparks, Reno and Northern Nevada, and has served the area since 1985. A heat pump cools your home in summer and heats it efficiently for most of the winter. Many local homes pair one with a gas furnace as a dual-fuel system. We size each system for our high-desert climate and repair heat pumps from all major brands.

  • Local since 1985: based at 605 Spice Islands Dr #5, Sparks, NV 89431

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump looks like a central air conditioner, and in summer it works like one, moving heat out of your home. In winter it runs in reverse, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, a heat pump can deliver much more heating energy than it uses in electricity, especially on mild days.

One system gives you both cooling and heating, controlled by one thermostat.

Do Heat Pumps Work in Northern Nevada Winters?

Yes, with the right equipment and setup. Sparks and Reno have cold nights, but many winter days are mild and sunny. Those are the conditions in which heat pumps work best. Today’s cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing. For the coldest nights there are two common approaches:

  • A dual-fuel system. The heat pump is paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats on mild days, and the furnace switches on automatically when it gets very cold. For homes with natural gas, this is often the most comfortable and cost-effective setup in the Reno–Sparks area.
  • An all-electric system with backup heat. A cold-climate heat pump with electric auxiliary heat suits homes without gas service.

We’ll recommend the setup that fits your home, your utility rates and how you like to heat it.

Benefits of a Heat Pump

  • Heating and cooling in one system. One outdoor unit replaces a separate air conditioner.
  • Efficient heating on mild days, which can lower winter energy costs compared with older furnaces or electric heat.
  • Even, steady comfort. Variable-speed models run longer at low output, which avoids temperature swings.
  • Less fuel burned at home. When the heat pump does the heating, no gas is burned in the house.
  • A good fit when your AC needs replacing. Swapping a worn-out air conditioner for a heat pump adds efficient heating for a relatively small extra cost.

Heat Pump Installation

  1. Assessment and Manual J load calculation. We size the system for both summer cooling and winter heating, taking in insulation, windows and our local climate.
  2. System design. We match the heat pump to your existing furnace or air handler, or recommend a new one. We plan the backup heat and set the outdoor temperature at which a dual-fuel system switches to gas.
  3. Written options and pricing at different efficiency levels, with free estimates for new systems.
  4. Permit and installation. We pull the permit, remove the old equipment and recover its refrigerant to EPA rules. Then we install the new outdoor unit, line set, controls and thermostat.
  5. Commissioning. We check the refrigerant charge, airflow, defrost operation and backup heat. We set the thermostat correctly and show you how it works.

Prefer ductless? Mini-split heat pumps heat and cool individual rooms or additions without ducts. See ductless mini-splits.

Heat Pump Repair

Our technicians repair heat pumps from Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, American Standard, Ruud and other major brands, whoever installed them. Common problems include:

  • No heat, or cool air in heat mode. Often a reversing valve, a defrost control, low refrigerant or a thermostat setting.
  • The outdoor unit iced over and not clearing. Defrost failures are common in cold snaps.
  • Auxiliary or emergency heat running all the time, which pushes up your power bill.
  • Refrigerant leaks that reduce both heating and cooling.
  • Fan motor, capacitor and contactor failures.
  • Short cycling and loud noises.

We diagnose first and give you the price before any work begins. A diagnostic fee may apply to repair visits. Same-day service is available whenever our schedule allows. For cooling-season problems, also see AC repair.

Is It Normal for My Heat Pump To…?

  • …steam or make a whooshing sound in winter? Usually yes. That’s the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil. It should finish within a few minutes.
  • …blow air that feels cooler than a furnace? Yes. Heat pump air is warm but not hot, and the system runs longer and more steadily.
  • …have frost on the outdoor unit? A light frost is normal. Thick ice that doesn’t clear means it needs service.

What Affects the Cost of a Heat Pump?

  • The size and efficiency ratings (SEER2 for cooling, HSPF2 for heating)
  • Whether it’s a standard or cold-climate model
  • Dual-fuel with your existing furnace, or a new furnace or air handler
  • Ductwork and electrical changes
  • Thermostat and controls

We give you a written estimate covering all of this. Ask about Wisetack financing.

Heat Pump Maintenance

A heat pump runs in both summer and winter, so it works more hours a year than an air conditioner. Two tune-ups a year protect its efficiency and catch defrost and electrical problems early. The M&S Maintenance Plan includes a spring cooling visit and a fall heating visit. It also gives you priority scheduling and 10% off repairs.

Heat Pump FAQs

Can a heat pump heat my home on the coldest nights in Sparks?

Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing. On the coldest nights, a dual-fuel system switches to your gas furnace, and an all-electric system uses backup heat. Either way, the house stays warm.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than a gas furnace?

It depends on your electricity and gas rates and the outdoor temperature. On mild days, a heat pump is usually the cheaper way to heat. On very cold nights, gas often is. That’s why dual-fuel systems, which use whichever is cheaper, are popular in Northern Nevada.

Can I replace my air conditioner with a heat pump?

Yes. In most homes the heat pump goes in the same spot as the old AC and connects to the existing furnace, which becomes a dual-fuel system. You get efficient heating on mild days for little more than the cost of replacing the AC.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in heating mode?

During a defrost cycle, the air can feel cool for a few minutes. That’s normal. If it continues, the cause may be a reversing valve, a defrost control, low refrigerant or a thermostat setting. Call us to have it checked.

How long does a heat pump last?

With regular maintenance, many heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years. Because they run all year, two tune-ups a year make the biggest difference to how long they last.

Do you repair heat pumps you didn’t install?

Yes. We repair heat pumps from all major brands, whoever installed them.
