When to Replace Your Furnace

We’ll never recommend a new furnace you don’t need. Replacement usually makes sense when:

  • The furnace is 15 to 20 years old or more and needs repairs most winters.
  • A cracked heat exchanger has been confirmed.
  • Gas bills keep rising even though you use the heat the same way.
  • Rooms heat unevenly, or the furnace runs constantly on cold nights.
  • The repair cost times the furnace’s age is more than $5,000.
  • You’re replacing the air conditioner and want matched indoor and outdoor equipment.

If a repair will keep your furnace running safely for several more years, we’ll tell you. See furnace and heater repair.

Heating Systems We Install

High-efficiency gas furnaces

Most Northern Nevada homes heat with natural gas. Modern condensing furnaces with ratings of 90% AFUE or more turn nearly all of their fuel into heat. Older 80% furnaces send much more of it up the flue. Variable-speed and two-stage models also run more quietly and heat the house more evenly.

Heat pumps

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so it heats very efficiently on mild days and also cools in summer. Cold-climate models have improved a lot and keep working well below freezing. See heat pump installation.

Dual-fuel systems

A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats on the many mild days, and the furnace switches on automatically on the coldest nights. In the Reno–Sparks climate, this is often the most comfortable and cost-effective setup.

Electric furnaces and ductless mini-splits

For homes without gas service, additions or rooms the main system doesn’t reach, we also install electric furnaces and ductless mini-splits.

We install Ruud equipment. If you’d like a particular brand, let us know.

Our Furnace Installation Process

  1. Home assessment and load calculation. We measure your heating needs using a Manual J calculation, which covers insulation, windows, square footage and our local climate. An oversized furnace short-cycles and wastes fuel. An undersized one can’t keep up in January.
  2. Options and a written estimate. We set out several systems at different efficiency levels and prices, and explain the running costs and comfort of each.
  3. Permit. We get the required permit from your local building department.
  4. Installation day. We remove and dispose of the old furnace and install the new one. We connect the gas, electrical and ductwork, and fit new venting where needed. High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipe and need a condensate drain.
  5. Altitude setup and safety testing. At our elevation, gas furnaces have to be set up to the manufacturer’s high-altitude specifications. We check gas pressure, combustion, venting, the safety controls and the temperature rise before we leave.
  6. Walkthrough and registration. We show you how to use the thermostat and register your equipment for its manufacturer’s warranty.

What Affects the Cost of a New Furnace?

  • Efficiency (AFUE) and features: single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed.
  • System type: gas furnace, heat pump, dual-fuel or electric.
  • Venting changes when you upgrade from an 80% to a 90%+ furnace.
  • Ductwork condition and any changes needed for good airflow.
  • Where the furnace is: attic, garage, closet or crawl space.
  • Whether the AC or coil is replaced at the same time.

Your estimate covers all of this in writing, with no surprises. Ask about Wisetack financing to spread the cost.

Installing Heating Equipment at Northern Nevada Altitude

Sparks and Reno sit around 4,400 to 4,500 feet, and the area around Lake Tahoe is higher. There is less oxygen at altitude, which affects how gas burns. Most manufacturers require furnaces to be adjusted for high-altitude use. A furnace that isn’t set up correctly can burn dirty, soot up, overheat or produce more carbon monoxide. Our technicians install for local conditions every day and set each furnace to the manufacturer’s high-altitude specifications. We then test combustion and venting before the job is signed off.

Our winters also matter. Cold nights, mild afternoons and dry air make variable-speed blowers, good filtration and, in many homes, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace worth considering. We’ll explain the choices for your home in plain terms.

Protecting Your New Heating System

New furnaces usually come with a manufacturer’s parts warranty, often 5 to 10 years and sometimes longer when the equipment is registered. Heat exchangers often have longer coverage. We register your equipment and explain what’s covered. We also back our installation work with a full warranty.

Yearly maintenance keeps the furnace efficient and safe. The M&S Maintenance Plan includes a 29-point heating tune-up each fall and a 30-point AC tune-up each spring. It also gives you priority scheduling and 10% off service and repairs.

Furnace Installation FAQs

How long does a furnace replacement take?

Most furnace replacements are finished in one day. Changing from an 80% to a 90%+ furnace, which needs new venting, or replacing the AC at the same time can add a few hours. We’ll confirm the timing when we schedule.

Is a 90% or higher efficiency furnace worth it in Reno and Sparks?

For most homes, yes. Our long heating season means the fuel savings add up over the life of the furnace. The extra cost of venting changes depends on your house, and we’ll show you the numbers in your estimate.

Should I choose a gas furnace, a heat pump or both?

Many Northern Nevada homes do best with both. In a dual-fuel system, the heat pump handles mild days efficiently and the gas furnace takes over on the coldest nights. A gas furnace alone is still a good choice for many homes. We’ll compare the options for yours.

Do furnaces need special setup for high altitude?

Yes. Most manufacturers require gas furnaces to be adjusted for high elevations like ours. We set up and test every furnace to the manufacturer’s high-altitude specifications, so it burns cleanly and safely.

Do you offer free estimates on new furnaces?

Yes. Estimates for new heating systems are free. We assess your home, run a load calculation and give you written options at different price points.

Will I be without heat on installation day?

Only for part of the day while the old furnace is swapped out. Most installations are finished and heating again the same day. If you’re worried about a very cold day, tell us when you schedule and we’ll plan around it.
