Air Conditioner Problems We Fix
An air conditioner can fail in small ways that just waste energy, or it can stop cooling altogether. Either way, an early repair usually costs less than waiting until a small fault damages the compressor. These are the problems we see most often in Sparks and Reno homes:
- The AC blows warm air. Usually a low refrigerant charge, a failed capacitor or a compressor that isn’t starting.
- The system won’t turn on. Often a tripped breaker, a failed contactor, a thermostat fault or a blown control-board fuse.
- Refrigerant leaks. We find the leak and repair it before we recharge the system. Topping up a leaking system just puts off the next breakdown.
- Ice on the outdoor unit or the indoor evaporator coil. Usually caused by poor airflow, a clogged filter or low refrigerant.
- Blower motor failures. The outdoor unit runs, but little or no air reaches your vents.
- Water leaking indoors. Usually a clogged condensate drain line or a cracked drain pan.
- Grinding, squealing, buzzing or clicking. Signs of worn bearings, a failing fan motor or electrical trouble.
- Electrical and control failures. Burned wiring, bad relays and failed control boards.
- Thermostat problems. Wrong readings, short cycling or a smart thermostat that has lost touch with the system.
How an M&S AC Repair Visit Works
- You call or book online. Tell us what the system is doing. We schedule the earliest available time and let you know when your technician will arrive, so you’re not left waiting all day.
- We diagnose before we repair. The technician checks the refrigerant pressures, electrical parts, airflow, drain and thermostat to find the real cause, not just the symptom.
- You get a clear explanation and a price. We explain what failed and why. We give you your repair options and, if the system is near the end of its life, an honest comparison with replacement. Nothing is done until you approve it. We never recommend repairs you don’t need.
- We make the repair. Most common repairs, such as capacitors, contactors, drain lines and refrigerant leaks we can reach, are finished in one to two hours. Larger repairs that need parts ordered are scheduled as soon as the parts arrive.
- We test the whole system. We check cooling performance before we leave. If anything isn’t right after a repair, call us and we’ll come back to put it right as a priority.
What Affects the Cost of AC Repair?
We can’t quote a fair price for a repair until we’ve seen the system. A $20 part and a failed compressor can cause the same symptom. After the diagnosis, the price depends on:
- The part that failed. Capacitors, contactors and drain clogs are low-cost repairs. Compressors, coils and blower motors cost more.
- The refrigerant type and amount. Older systems that use R-22 refrigerant are much more expensive to recharge, because R-22 is no longer produced.
- Access. Equipment in tight attics or crawl spaces takes longer to work on.
- Warranty status. If the part is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, the cost of the part may be covered.
A diagnostic fee may apply to repair visits. It covers the technician’s time to test the system and find the fault. If the repair is a large expense, ask us about financing through Wisetack. M&S Maintenance Plan members get 10% off repairs.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?
We’ll always tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it. A simple guide is the “5,000 rule”: multiply the age of the system in years by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, get a replacement quote before you decide. For example, a $450 repair on a 12-year-old system comes to $5,400. Replacement also makes sense when the system:
- is more than 10 to 12 years old and needs repairs more and more often,
- uses R-22 refrigerant and has a leak, or
- can’t keep the house comfortable on the hottest afternoons, even when everything is working.
If replacement is the better choice, we install high-efficiency Ruud systems, sized correctly for your home with a Manual J load calculation. Learn more about AC installation in Sparks and Reno.
Why Northern Nevada Is Hard on Air Conditioners
Air conditioners in the Truckee Meadows work in conditions that wear them out faster than in many other places:
- Altitude. Sparks and Reno sit around 4,400 to 4,500 feet. Thinner air carries heat away less effectively, so outdoor units run longer to do the same work.
- Dust, pollen and wildfire smoke. High-desert dust and summer smoke clog filters and the fins of the outdoor coil. That cuts airflow and is a leading cause of frozen coils and overheated compressors.
- Heat waves. A system that copes well on an ordinary summer day can fail during a run of 100-degree afternoons. Small problems tend to turn into breakdowns during heat waves.
- Large swings between day and night temperatures. Systems start and stop more often, which wears out capacitors, contactors and compressors.
Most of these problems can be prevented. A spring tune-up, which is included in the M&S Maintenance Plan, cleans the coil, checks the refrigerant charge and finds weak electrical parts before the summer heat arrives.
Before You Call: Quick Checks
We don’t recommend do-it-yourself repairs on refrigerant or electrical parts. A few safe checks, though, can sometimes get your cooling back without a service call:
- Check that the thermostat is set to Cool and set below the room temperature, and replace its batteries if it uses them.
- Check that the AC and furnace breakers are on, along with the shut-off switch near the indoor unit.
- Replace a dirty air filter.
- Make sure the supply vents and return grilles are open and not blocked by furniture.
- Clear plants and debris from around the outdoor unit.
If the system still isn’t cooling, or you see ice, water or burn marks, turn the system off and call us at (775) 843-7930.

AC Repair FAQs
How quickly can you repair my AC in Sparks?
We offer same-day service whenever the schedule allows, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. In peak summer weeks, calling early in the morning gives you the best chance of a same-day visit. Most standard repairs are finished in one to two hours once the technician arrives.
Do you repair heat pumps and ductless mini-splits as well as central AC?
Yes. Our technicians repair central split-system air conditioners, packaged units, heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems from all major manufacturers.
Will you repair an air conditioner that another company installed?
Yes. We repair any brand, whoever installed it. If your original installer is no longer around or can’t come out in time, we can help.
Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?
The most common causes are a dirty filter or outdoor coil, which is very common with Northern Nevada dust and smoke, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor that keeps the compressor from starting, or a frozen evaporator coil. Change the filter and check the thermostat first. If that doesn’t fix it, turn the system off so it doesn’t damage the compressor, and call us.
Is ice on my air conditioner an emergency?
Turn the system off and let the ice melt. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor. Ice usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. A technician needs to find the cause, or the ice will come back.
Do you tell me the price before you start the repair?
Yes. After the diagnosis, your technician explains what failed and what it will cost to fix. No repair work begins until you approve it. A diagnostic fee may apply to repair visits.
How can I stop my AC breaking down every summer?
Book a spring tune-up every year. The M&S Maintenance Plan includes a 30-point AC inspection and tune-up in spring and a 29-point heating tune-up in fall. It also gives you priority scheduling and 10% off repairs.
